Today I had a chance to spend some time working from observation in my sketch-book. Sonia made it clear that each of the drawings I developed had to be created by looking at something in the real world, rather than working from photographs. I discovered I had to abandon preconceived ideas and really start to look and think to create each image. For inspiration and to loosen up my approach I started by researching the sketching styles of famous designers and architects including Zaha Hadid, Zandra Rhodes, Frank Gehry and Carlo Scarpa; each of whom I discovered has a completely different approach to observational drawing. I realised that when you quickly want to jot down a design idea, a drawing is a more precise way to develop a sense of what you are trying to express than a full sketch page of words can be. I realised that the more you draw the faster your own inventions can be developed and as sketching is a free medium, you don't have to stay with one style you can just express whatever comes to mind without having boundaries. This was a really enriching lesson: clearly I have to draw more.
