In our developer designed compounds we can easily become used to seeing generic house doors, however digging around the older neighbourhoods in Dubai you can find a wide selection of door colours, materials, patterns, shapes and sizes.

In Jumeriah for example I would almost describe the doors I discovered (and which can be seen in this posts' photographs) as 'soulful'. Each door tells a story and entices you to imagine the variety of lived experiences contained behind them.

As I and the other SVENM interns journeyed around Jumeirah this week searching out hidden or lesser seen architecture and design locations we found many of these doors on older courtyard style houses. What a small item in the larger scheme of an architectural design but yet the Islamic patterns, Arabic verses, Moroccan finishes and clear attention to detail on each of these doors made me understand that a great door start of the visual narrative of a great house.
