Leen! Hadeel! Shall we meet downstairs?

Sven called us for a meeting at my favourite table in the office. Yes the long wooden beauty.

He placed two folders full of sketches, plans and initial thoughts about a private hospital project that had started in Germany but was never built. He spoke to us about how the client aimed to create the most comfortable, hotel like experience for patients that would stay at the hospital for periods of 6 months and more. After showing us the moods representing the interiors (hotel room, lobby etc..). He asked us to archive the information and compile it as a finished folder to inspire future projects.

I then asked Sven a question eagerly," How can I learn to sketch the way you do so professionally? "

Sven's answer? was practice, practice, practice! It is the most important thing when it comes to gaining this skill, the more you practice the better you get. For example, "force yourself to draw a chair that you haven't drawn before everyday, or start by drawing cubes in different perspectives,, that is a great exercise to get yourself to understand the page and how to lay things on it."

What I learnt from this answer is that the important factors are understanding perspective and how it works, knowing the parameter of your drawing, and most importantly, meditation. Your mind needs to be in-sync with your hand so you can sketch without hesitation. Sven continued saying,"There will be mistakes, lines that are not straights, wrong angles and many more. However, the more you sketch, the less important the mistakes get. All you need to do is trust your thoughts because there is no place for doubt."

Some sketches by Sven

After this, Sven gave me a new task. I had to make drawings of the designed objects in the office; the light pendant, the big beautiful wooden table, a wall-hung picture frame, the office's door, the cube seats, the entrance steel seat and his own desk.

I took pictures of these objects to help me make the drawings. These drawings would then be showcased and represented to SVEN|M visitors to help them understand that the firm's bespoke objects are for sale. The drawings went well! And I managed to draw each object except for the pendant which I found a bit complicated so took a bit more time than the others.
