Early day! so.. starting from today and every other day for the rest of the internship, our working day will commence at 10 am. I arrived a little early so i decided to check up on the site and see the worker's progress of the Ramadan tent. They were doing a great job and already set up the pebble ground that will house the Bonsai trees, in addition to that they had finished painting the walls.

so we met at 10 am sharp outside the office and took off immediately to meet Patrick, the creative director of Careem, the Taxi Company. He met with us to discuss the new project they are working on for a charity cause. And so, his company came to us for design advice about the space of the exhibition, the warehouse they are hosting their event at, in AlSerkal Avenue.
The exhibition is for an Art Psychotherapy Foundation called كينونة , and the event is a showcase of drawings and children portraits. These simple, yet beautiful works of art are made by the children show the effect of this type of therapy on a troubled individual. Whether refugee children or their mothers or even those who went through traumatic experiences, the therapy seems to do a great job in elevating their sense of self and encouraging them to lead a better more positive life!

After visiting the site with Patrick, we went back to the office to discuss the potential ideas that would contribute to putting this event together, and this included going over the plan that Patrick provided. From there, we understood that the things they wanted to add like walls, rugs, tables projections and many others were going to cost loads of money.. and by loads, I mean some 120 k euros!
And so, Sonia took the time to explain how many of these expenses can and should be cut down to half the amount and still keep the main idea of the exhibition. Not only that but even portray it in a more interactive way that would engage visitors. It was then proposed that maybe the opening day was to be postponed for the idea to have the time to develop and be portrayed in the most suitable and intriguing way. Also, one very important question was brought up by Sonia, How do they plan to publicize and attract the public to their event? keeping in mind the fact that 1. The weather is hot, 2. Not many people actually know about the organisation or the event itself. so, she suggested then make themselves very visible on social media and perhaps print put posters that can be hung around the avenue for people to notice.
After Patrick took off, Sven handed Leen and I trace paper and asked us to collaborate together to produce a better zoned and more well thought out plan that accommodates the needs of the exhibition. Sketches, colors, images and thoughts were flying in mid air, trying to come together to form a coherent identity for the exhibition. Hours later we were still coming up with ideas for the design, meanwhile, Sven would visit us every now and then to critique the work and guide us into approaching it in the right way. Those critiques felt a lot like the "deskrits" we had uni! it basically felt like another studio project but IN REAL ..REAL LIFE! and so, along with that reality came the phone calls to contractors, suppliers and many emails flying back and forth between the client and us.
The design process is still in progress, and will hopefully come to and end Sunday afternoon when we meet up with Patrick again to discuss our ideas! Stay tuned to see the final results!
